Being a dog parent is a uniquely exciting venture. Whether you're experienced or a first-timer, there is always something to learn. Guard dogs are adopted for obvious reasons, however, every breed and dog are different in traits and personality. Below you'll find 5 things to consider when adopting an Akita.
When seeking a certain breed for guard dog purposes, it's important to know that not all breeds function the same way. The athleticism, endurance, and high trainability of a German Shepherd make them great police dogs. Rottweilers have a history of herding and guarding livestock which make them great territorial guard dogs for property.
Akitas make great personal protection dogs. They are fiercely loyal to their humans and are wary of strangers and other dogs. Their size and strength outweigh many other guard specific breeds. Surely a dog that has the genetic history of challenging bears can protect you from an intruder or an aggressive animal. You'll look forward to being protected and loved by one of the most regal looking guard dog breeds to date.
Living Space Considerations
Apartment
Despite their large size, Akitas make excellent apartment dogs due to their quiet nature. Puzzle toys, 60 minutes of physical activity per day accompanied by crate/alone-time training will alleviate destructional behaviors. Well-trained adult Akitas can stay home alone for up to 6 hours.
Note: Depending on the city or state, Akitas are prone to be on breed restrictions lists. Cities like Austin, San Antonio, Charleston, Charlotte, and San Francisco just to name a few, have little to no breed restrictions.
Home With a Yard
A big dog with a yard. No breed restrictions, the freedom to do whatever you want (unless there's a strict HOA in place); sounds grand! Only other major necessity would be a strong fence and training you pup not to dig in certain areas i.e. flowerbeds, pipe areas, etc.
On the contrary, being an apartment dweller forces you to be out amongst your community. The convenience of your own backyard could entice you to become a bit of a recluse with your fur-baby. Be sure to socialize early and often.
Experience Level
First-Time Owners
While Akitas are typically recommended for more experienced owners because of their smart independent nature, an owner who commands authority without excessive force can be successful. Consider studying training videos prior to adoption and maintaining a strict training schedule.
Experienced Owners
If you've had dogs before, you'll appreciate the loyal and protective nature of an Akita, especially if this is your first guard dog.
Family Compatibility
Small Children
Ensure careful monitoring and separation until proper training and familiarization. Even Akita puppies can be a bit rough with play until trained.
Older Children (12-18)
Older children that have learned respect for animals can work well with Akitas, especially puppies.
Adults
Refer to dog owner experience of this article.
Owner's Role
Be assertive, loving, respectful and consistent for successful integration into any family.
Grooming Requirements
Regular Brushing
Brush at least every other day to prevent matting and stray fur from covering your home.
Bathing Schedule
Once every 5-6 weeks is sufficient. Use a semi-powerful, low-heat dryer to speed up the drying process and minimize the volume of the dryer frightening your pup.
Coat Blow Season
Expect more shedding during the spring and fall. Consider outdoor grooming or professional help during this time. Many pet stores such as PetSmart or Tomilson's offer use of their facilities for a fee.
